BEFORE THE RACE

  • Teams and Key Drivers:  The 2004 season was largely dominated by Ferrari and Michael Schumacher, who had won the first five races. Ferrari appeared unbeatable, with Schumacher on course for a seventh world title. BAR-Honda, with Jenson Button, emerged as a serious contender, frequently starting at the top of the grid. Renault, with Fernando Alonso and Jarno Trulli, showed competitiveness, while McLaren, featuring Kimi Räikkönen and David Coulthard, struggled with reliability issues.
  • Standings Before Monaco:  Michael Schumacher led the drivers’ championship with a commanding margin, and Ferrari dominated the constructors’ standings. Teams like BAR and Renault were pushing to disrupt Ferrari’s dominance.

DURING THE RACE

  • Weather:  The race was held under dry and sunny conditions, perfect for an intense Monaco race.
  • Starting Grid: Jarno Trulli started from pole for Renault, followed by Jenson Button (BAR) in second and Michael Schumacher (Ferrari) in fourth, an unusual position for him that season.
  • Key Moments: Trulli maintained his lead after a strong start, fending off pressure from Button and others. Schumacher’s race ended in drama during a safety car period after colliding with Juan Pablo Montoya in the tunnel, forcing him to retire. This incident cleared the way for Trulli and Button to contest the victory. Trulli maintained his composure under late pressure from Button and secured his first and only Formula 1 win.

AFTER THE RACE

  • Podium:  Jarno Trulli won the race for Renault, with Jenson Button (BAR-Honda) finishing second and Rubens Barrichello (Ferrari) in third place.
  • Standings After the Race: Despite Schumacher’s retirement, Ferrari retained a significant lead in both championships. The race highlighted that other teams could challenge Ferrari under certain conditions. Trulli’s victory marked a key achievement for Renault in an otherwise Ferrari-dominated season.
