BEFORE THE RACE

  • Teams and Key Drivers: David Coulthard entered Monaco in strong form following his victory in Austria, trailing Michael Schumacher by just four points in the drivers’ championship. The intense battle between Coulthard and Schumacher for the top spot was the focal point of the race. McLaren-Mercedes appeared to have a slight edge in qualifying, but Ferrari, led by Schumacher, remained a strong contender. While Coulthard and Schumacher were the primary favorites, Rubens Barrichello and Mika Häkkinen were also considered serious challengers.
  • Standings Before the Race:  Michael Schumacher led the championship with 36 points, followed by David Coulthard with 32 points. Barrichello and Häkkinen were third and fourth, respectively, though both needed strong results at Monaco to close the gap.

DURING THE RACE

  • Weather:  The race took place under overcast skies, with temperatures around 25°C, creating ideal conditions for Formula 1. However, unpredictable incidents would shape the race.
  • Starting Grid:  David Coulthard claimed pole position, but a pre-race electronic issue forced him to start from the back of the grid, crushing his hopes of victory. Michael Schumacher inherited the top spot, followed by Mika Häkkinen, Rubens Barrichello, and the Williams-BMW drivers. Eddie Irvine, the surprise of qualifying, started from sixth.
  • Key Moments: Coulthard’s electronic problem before the formation lap relegated him to the back of the field. Schumacher took the lead, followed by Häkkinen. Nick Heidfeld retired on the first lap after an accident, and Juan Pablo Montoya crashed out by the third lap. Häkkinen encountered suspension issues and retired on lap 16, leaving Schumacher unchallenged at the front. Meanwhile, Coulthard struggled behind Enrique Bernoldi for much of the race, losing valuable time and any realistic chance of a strong finish.

AFTER THE RACE

  • Podium:  Michael Schumacher dominated the race from start to finish, securing a commanding victory with a lead of over 30 seconds. Rubens Barrichello finished second despite struggling with leg pain, while Eddie Irvine claimed third place, earning Jaguar their first-ever podium in Formula 1.
  • Standings After the Race:  Schumacher’s victory extended his lead in the championship, with Barrichello finishing second to strengthen Ferrari’s constructors’ standing. Irvine’s third-place finish was a milestone for Jaguar, highlighting a rare achievement for the team. Coulthard finished fifth after a challenging race, losing further ground to Schumacher in the championship. The race underscored Ferrari’s dominance and Schumacher’s masterful control on the streets of Monaco.
