BEFORE THE RACE

  • Teams and Key Drivers: In 1997, Williams dominated the season with Jacques Villeneuve and Heinz-Harald Frentzen, thanks to a powerful and well-balanced car. Ferrari, led by Michael Schumacher, remained Williams’ primary rival, while Benetton, with Jean Alesi and Gerhard Berger, worked to stay competitive. McLaren, featuring David Coulthard and Mika Häkkinen, showed progress but had yet to reach the level of Williams and Ferrari. This Grand Prix was highly anticipated, particularly due to Schumacher’s recent strong performances on technical circuits.
  • Standings Before Monaco: Jacques Villeneuve led the drivers’ championship with multiple victories, but Schumacher was close behind, keeping the pressure on Ferrari’s behalf.

DURING THE RACE

  • Weather:  The race was held under heavy rain, making the track extremely slippery and challenging. These conditions significantly increased the difficulty level, leading to numerous incidents and retirements.
  • Starting Grid:  Michael Schumacher qualified second, behind Williams’ Heinz-Harald Frentzen, while Jacques Villeneuve started further back after struggling in qualifying.
  • Key Moments:  Schumacher made an outstanding start, quickly overtaking Frentzen to take the lead. Exploiting the wet conditions, he built a significant gap over the rest of the field, showcasing his exceptional skill in the rain. The challenging conditions led to many incidents and retirements, but Schumacher maintained an impressive pace, staying focused to avoid Monaco’s notorious pitfalls. Meanwhile, Olivier Panis (Prost) and Rubens Barrichello (Stewart) capitalized on the chaos to climb up the order.

AFTER THE RACE

  • Podium:  Michael Schumacher won the race for Ferrari, cementing his reputation as a master in wet conditions. Rubens Barrichello finished second for Stewart, delivering an excellent result for the team. Eddie Irvine, Schumacher’s teammate at Ferrari, took third, ensuring a double podium for Ferrari.
  • Standings After the Race:  Schumacher’s victory closed the gap to Villeneuve in the fight for the drivers’ championship, while Ferrari strengthened its position in the constructors’ standings, though Williams remained in the lead. The win highlighted Schumacher’s ability to excel in adverse conditions, a crucial strength for the remainder of the season.
