BEFORE THE RACE

  • Teams and Key Drivers: The 1986 season was defined by fierce competition between Williams, McLaren, and Lotus. Williams-Honda boasted powerful turbo engines, while McLaren, equipped with TAG-Porsche engines, remained a strong contender. Lotus, with Renault engines and a highly efficient chassis, was also in the mix. The championship favorites included Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet for Williams, Alain Prost for McLaren, and Ayrton Senna for Lotus. Prost, the defending champion, was in excellent form, while Senna’s skill on technical circuits like Monaco made him a significant threat.
  • Standings Before the Race: Alain Prost led the drivers’ championship after several strong performances early in the season. McLaren topped the constructors’ standings, but Williams, with the power of its Honda engines, posed a serious challenge.

 

DURING THE RACE
